Evidence-Based Practice
Nurses at GBMC are committed to providing the highest quality care possible to their patients. To be sure that this care is grounded in the most recent science, nurses utilize evidence-based practice to make clinical decisions and develop plans of care with their patients.
Evidence-based practice is a problem solving approach that integrates the best available research and scientific evidence. This evidence includes the individual needs and preferences of every patient. This added collaboration allows nurses to provide individualized, high quality patient care every day.
GBMC has many resources to assist our nurses in learning how to employ evidence-based practice. There is an extensive in-house and online library available to nurses, as well as expert assistance in conducting literature searches for best practice. Each unit has an evidence-based practice council that meets monthly. In this council nurses work through the process of searching and critiquing evidence, as well as conducting evidence-based projects on their unit. GBMC also provides bedside nurses with opportunities to grow and be recognized for their expert evidence-based care through a variety of programs including the Frontline Leader Program and the Clinical Ladder Program.

Nursing Orientation
Nursing orientation consists of a 4 day core educational phase and includes both a didactic component and hands on skills. This is followed by a specific unit preceptorship of several weeks' duration, which is driven by the orientee's progress. Preceptorship is based on targeted clinical experiences, meeting predetermined objectives, as well as those identified by the orientee. There are regular evaluation meetings with the Education Specialist, Nurse Educator/Preceptor and Unit Manager. Staff members are required to perform their job skills at a safe, competent level before functioning independently.
