GBMC is committed to initiatives and activities to improve the health our communities. We do not do this work alone. We work in collaboration with the Baltimore County Department of Health, area hospitals and many community-based organizations.
What is a Community Benefit?
A community benefit is a planned, organized, and measured approach to meeting identified community health needs within a given service area. It most often requires collaboration with other non-profit and public community-based organizations and meets the following parameters:
- Improves the health status and well-being of specific vulnerable populations
- Generates a low or negative margin
- Is not provided for marketing purposes
- Supports services or programs that would likely be discontinued if the decision were made on a purely financial basis
Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA)
Every three years, we conduct a needs assessment to understand, quantify, and articulate the health needs of the communities we serve. We also develop a plan to address these needs.
Community Benefit Funding
GBMC’s Community Benefit program directly funds local organizations and health-related initiatives in our service area. These efforts support the CHNA health priorities and improve the health and well-being of the community.
Community Benefit Reporting
We report our community benefit activities to the Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC). In response to the growing interest in community benefit services provided by Maryland Hospitals, the Maryland General Assembly mandates that the HSCRC collect hospital community benefit information. This statewide report is available to the public.
