Simulation Innovation Learning Center at GBMC

Simulation Innovation Learning Center

A comprehensive training center aimed at providing the highest level of education possible for clinicians

The Simulation Center at GBMC consists of a lab focused on task-based training and replica hospital rooms created to imitate real-life settings. Participants can train for almost any medical situation from inserting an IV, to performing complex surgery, to practicing difficult conversations with patients.

Operated by a full-time RN Simulation Coordinator and a Simulation Operation Specialist, the Simulation Center is a critical part of GBMC HealthCare System’s continuing education program, enabling staff members of all clinical backgrounds to enhance their skills and adapt to evolving techniques and technology.

Rooms

Simulation Rooms
The rooms in the Simulation Center were modeled after actual rooms in the hospital. They are made to be as realistic as possible with details down to the type of sinks used in the Operating Room and the sliding doors in the Emergency Department. Every room is fully equipped with the tools that are present in that setting — inpatient rooms have lifts and bathrooms, consulting rooms have exam tables, and the NICU has real isolettes.

Control Center
Located in the hub of the Center is a control room, which allows trainers to view and manage simulations in real time. They can watch multiple procedure rooms, either through two-way glass or a video feed. From this room, trainers are able to remotely control the manikins in order to create unpredictable medical situations that the trainee must respond to.

Debriefing Rooms
The Center has several debriefing rooms where participants can get detailed feedback on their collective and individual performance through video playback. This space allows trainees to discuss their experience with trainers and other participants and identify areas for improvement.

Manikins

GBMC has an array of life-like manikins with technology that allows them to closely mimic the behaviors of real patients. The manikins in the Simulation Center are anatomically accurate and range in age from 25-week-old preemies to full grown adults. The manikins can either follow pre-programmed scenarios or be remotely controlled by a trainer in a separate room. They allow clinicians to practice medical procedures in a realistic environment.

Some manikins are created for task-based training and allow clinicians to practice skills such as measuring blood pressure or performing CPR, while other manikins are highly advanced with vital signs and the ability to react to medications.

Some of their basic capabilities include:

  • Inhaling and exhaling
  • Creating audible noises such as coughing
  • Blinking and having pupils that respond to light
  • Bleeding and hemorrhaging

Certain manikins are built for specific medical situations. One of the most advanced manikins in the Simulation Center is called Sim Mom. She is able to accurately simulate giving birth and is perfect for training all kinds of obstetric and neonatal skills.
