What is an IBCLC?
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant® (IBCLC®) is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. IBCLCs are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners® (IBLCE®). Certification involves meeting eligibility standards including healthcare education, lactation specific education, and clinical practice experience requirements, and passing a rigorous professional certification examination developed by subject matter experts in conjunction with a professional psychometric firm including doctoral-level psychometricians. The certification program is accredited by the National Commission of Certifying Agencies of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence. IBCLCs work in a wide variety of health care settings including hospitals, pediatric offices, public health clinics, and private practice.

Inpatient Support

On the day of discharge, the lactation consultant will review basic breastfeeding information and help the parents develop a feeding plan, when necessary.
If a baby is admitted to the Intensive Care Nursery, the lactation consultant will help the mother initiate and maintain an adequate milk supply. When the baby is able to go to breast, the consultant is available for hands on help. In addition, a GBMC lactation consultant will help a mother and/or baby in any unit in the hospital.
