Framing on the third, fourth, and fifth floors of the Louis and Phyllis Friedman Building is 100% complete, which means the stunning renderings circulating over the past few years are that much closer to being realized.

It is not without tremendous commitment from the community that this work is made possible, including generous gifts forever memorialized with a naming.

Following are several named spaces and the important role they play in achieving The Promise Project vision for patients, families, staff members, and caregivers alike.

Below is a highlight reel of the incredible support we have received for this project, although it is not inclusive of all named spaces, opportunities, or the generous donors who supported them.

For available naming opportunities and to memorialize you or your family in this new space, please contact Senior Director of Development, Rachel Ladenson at 443.849.3765.

W. Lee and Mary G. Thomas Healing Garden

Located in an open courtyard visible from the entrance and the two new patient care units, the W. Lee and Mary G. Thomas Healing Garden is a place for patients, families, nurses, and doctors to pause and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Women’s Hospital Foundation Conference Center

Thanks to a generous contribution by one of GBMC's founding hospitals, the Women’s Hospital Foundation Conference Center represents GBMC’s commitment to the community’s wellbeing with meditation and community meeting space.

Patient care units

Two new 30-bed patient care units on the fourth and fifth floors—the Fran and Mark Harris Acute Patient Care Unit and the William C. and Suzanne Eck Higinbothom Acute Patient Care Unit—will offer privacy and comfort. These patient care units are at the heart of The Promise Project and of redesigned patient care itself. They are the foundation for a new care delivery system that prioritizes comfort, convenience, and state-of-the-art equipment and technology.

Patient care unit family lounges

Mary Jo and Brian Rogers and Sana and Andy Brooks funded two family lounges to offer families a space away from a patient’s room. These lounges offer visitors comfort during the time their loved one is staying at the hospital.

Patient and family respite rooms

Located on the patient care units as a place for families to gather, respite rooms offer just what the name suggests, respite during inpatient stays, thanks to Nancy and Preston Athey and Jeanne and Kurt Aarsand.

Huddle room

As physicians themselves, Melvin S. Blanchard, MD, FACP, Chair of Medicine at GBMC, and his wife, Dr. Erica Johnson, recognize the importance of multidisciplinary care teams being able to meet and discuss cases openly, but in a quiet and private setting prior to discussing next steps with patients and their families. Their donation makes small conference/huddle rooms available to serve this function in the new space.

Family zones

Patients deserve to have family and other caregivers present during their stay without worrying about their comfort. Thanks to Hord Coplan Macht and others, each patient care room offers a comfortable place to accommodate family members while they visit with their loved one, ensuring they are a part of the patient-centered care experience. The family zone includes a multi-purpose bench that can transform into a place to work, sleep, dine, and be a part of the healing process with loved ones. Each family zone is placed near a ceiling-high window to provide ample natural light.

Caregiver stations

In honor of former Chief Medical Officer of GBMC and President of GBMC Health Partners, Dr. Harold Tucker, and recurring philanthropists Dick and Mickey Price, five caregiver stations on the patient care units provide a centrally located position with visible sight lines to patient rooms. These stations allow caregivers space to complete technology and communication tasks while still being within view of their patients.
