Richard E. Hoover Rehabilitation Services for Low Vision and Blindness
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Insurance cover the doctors visit?
Yes: Most insurance companies will pay for the service under a specialty visit. If your insurance requires a referral then you are responsible for obtaining this. We will do whatever we can to make this process easier and more understandable, please call for more information
Does Insurance cover the occupational therapy visit?
The service is covered by Medicare Part B. If you have private insurance, you need to know if your insurance covers outpatient occupational therapy.
Does Insurance pay for the devices?
Unfortunately insurance does not cover any of the aids or non-optical aids recommended by the therapist and/or doctor. However we do have a grant available to our patients, which is based on financial need. You can call the office and ask them to send you a copy or you can obtain it at your first visit.
Do I have to see the doctor to get a magnifier?
Yes. If you require a magnifier higher than a 3X we will need you to come in first to see the doctor and possibly the occupational therapist. We do this because we want to be sure that you are getting the appropriate aid and the best training and education on how to use it.
Do I need an appointment to pick up low vision items like calendars or pens?
No. You can come to The VIEW and pick up any non-optical aids during our normal office hours. We have educated staff members who can help you with purchasing the proper aids for your needs.
Do I really need to plan on 3 hours for the first visit?
Yes. We provide a comprehensive exam. First with a technician, then with Dr. Sunness and, if warranted, scheduled with Michelle Bianchi.
Do I need to return after my first visit?
Often the occupational therapist will require at least 2-4 visits to ensure proper training and follow through. These visits will last 60-90 minutes. The therapist usually schedules patients every week, as needed. A home visit may be included.
If the doctor says I need new glasses, can I get them at Hoover?
No. We do not make glasses on our premises, but will provide a prescription for you to fill at the optical store of your preference. We do stock high power reading glasses for sale.
