Graduate Medical Education (GME)

Since its founding in 1965, GBMC has trained and prepared resident physicians for independent practice in their specialties. Currently, we sponsor ACGME-accredited residency programs in Internal Medicine and Colon and Rectal Surgery. 

GBMC also hosts visiting residents and fellows from affiliated institutions for training in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Otolaryngology, and Surgery. 

All requests for verification of residency training should be submitted online.

Undergraduate Medical Education (UME)

GBMC welcomes clerkship and elective students from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. At this time, we do not accept visiting medical students from other institutions.

Pharmacy Residency

GBMC's ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency program offers two PGY1 positions each year.

Nursing Education

GBMC provides clinical rotations for nursing students at all stages of their education.

Health Professions Students

GBMC partners with local colleges and universities to provide clinical education and training for health professions students. Rotations are available in many areas, including audiology, diagnostic medical sonography, dietetics, genetic counseling, healthcare administration, laboratory science, medical assisting, occupational therapy, pastoral care, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant specialties, radiology, social work, speech-language pathology, and surgical technology. Interested students should contact their school's placement coordinator.

Observation and Shadowing

Academic Affairs works with GBMC's clinical departments to coordinate short-term observation experiences for individuals exploring careers in healthcare. Spaces are limited and not guaranteed. To begin the process, prospective observers should first identify a GBMC employee who will supervise the observership, then contact Academic Affairs for more instructions. High school graduates, undergraduate and graduate students interested in longer-term volunteer commitments may be eligible for the College Student Program through GBMC's Volunteer Office.

Continuing Medical Education (CME)

GBMC is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Our Office of Continuing Medical Education organizes a variety of online and in-person programs to serve the needs of GBMC employees and the local medical community.

John E. Savage Medical Library

The John E. Savage Medical Library provides print and electronic resources to support patient care, education and research at GBMC. The library is open Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. — 4:30 p.m. and is located in Room 3273 of the Louis and Phyllis Friedman Building.

JCHIMP

GBMC publishes The Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives (JCHIMP), a peer-reviewed, PubMed indexed, open access journal. JCHIMP's content incudes original research, review articles, case reports, and editorials relevant to community hospitals.

Institutional Review Board (IRB)

GME Training Verifications

GBMC will provide verification of residency training within 30 days of receiving a completed request form and all required supporting documents. The cost for each verification is $50. Refunds are not available unless GBMC is unable to provide the requested information.

The following requests are eligible for a fee waiver:

• Current residents
• Residents who completed training within in the past year
• Employment at a GBMC facility
• U.S. military or government employment
