OB-GYN Post Graduate Training

In 1999, the GBMC Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Training Program became affiliated with the Johns Hopkins Residency Program. A formal merger of both programs took place a year later in July, 2000. All applications for the combined GBMC-JHH Residency Training Program are now processed through the ERAS common application process at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This is a four-year program of progressive residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology which, on successful completion, qualifies the physician to take the examination of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Joan Blomquist, MD, Chair

GBMC's Department of Gynecology is one of the largest in Maryland. In addition to the full-time faculty, there are more than 100 active attendings who admit patients and perform the full range of gynecologic procedures. The Department of Gynecology includes general gynecologic services as well as three formal Divisions including Urogynecology/Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, Gynecologic Oncology and Reproductive Endocrinology.

Joan Blomquist, MD, Chief, Division of Urogynecology

The Division of Urogynecology/Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery maintains state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment for evaluating pelvic floor disorders. This includes computer based multi-channel urodynamics, cystourethroscopy and a full range of neurophysiologic testing including EMG, terminal latency testing and assessment of pelvic floor reflexes and motor function. Over 300 patients are evaluated annually. Additionally, two cystoscopy suites with fluoroscopic capabilities are available for diagnostic purposes in the main operating suite. The Division continues to be actively involved with surgical innovations for pelvic floor dysfunction as well as numerous clinical trials and research protocols are currently underway.

Francis Grumbine, MD, Head of Division

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology at GBMC is dedicated to the modern management and clinical investigation of patients with gynecologic cancer. Approximately 125 newly-diagnosed patients with an invasive gynecologic malignancy receive their treatment each year at GBMC. At the bi-weekly Gynecologic Oncology Tumor Board, all new patients are presented, their pathology reviewed, and clinical staging established. The primary disease process is discussed and therapeutic decisions are formulated. Inpatients are cared for on the Gynecologic Oncology Unit where pre and post-operative care and the administration of chemotherapy are the responsibility of the resident assigned to the service. Patients receiving radiotherapy are jointly managed and followed by the GYN and Medical Oncologists.

Eugene Katz, MD, Head of Division

The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology is responsible for the care of patients with infertility and gynecologic endocrine problems. The Center provides the latest scientific medical care for all aspects of infertility, related endocrinology, reproductive biology and preimplantation genetics. The internationally recognized staff consists of physician specialists, a reproductive biologist, embryologists and nurses. Since the inception of the program, the reputation of the staff has attracted patients from around the nation and the world. All lab studies, treatments, procedures, pharmacy services, educational services and emotional support services offered by the Center are conveniently located in a comprehensive outpatient facility on GBMC's campus.

Victor Khouzami, M.D., Chairman

The Department of Obstetrics is the largest in Central Maryland with the second largest obstetrical volume in the state. GBMC recorded 4,747 deliveries in 2000. The hospital has 42 beds assigned for patients' care: 30 post-partum beds and 12 antepartum beds. The new Delivery Suite, with 17 LDR's (labor/delivery/recovery) opened in November 1992 and the new Antepartum unit opened in 2000. There are three operating rooms. Fetal monitoring is centralized with state-of-the-art equipment. An Antepartum testing unit, Ultrasound area and Genetics Laboratory are part of the new facility. The Perinatal Unit includes all antepartum assessment (non-stress testing, biophysical profiles, percutaneous umbilical blood sampling, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling). The PGY-2 resident is in charge of the High Risk Obstetrical Service. The PGY-3 Resident is responsible for overseeing the entire Obstetrical Service which includes the interpretation of all antepartum testing. 

The residents also participate in the management and care of the private patients. Obstetrical didatics include:

1. Bi-weekly Chairman Case Discussion Rounds
2. Weekly Perinatal and FHR tracing Rounds
3. Bi-monthly Grand Rounds
4. Monthly Perinatal-Neonatal Rounds
5. Monthly Multidisciplinary Rounds (Perinatal, Neonatal, Genetics, Pediatric Surgery).

Claire M. Weitz, M.D., Head of Division

Maternal-Fetal Medicine is concerned with the successful management of pregnancies complicated by any maternal, fetal or placental problems. All antepartum patients admitted to the Antepartum unit are managed by the junior resident under the supervision senior resident and the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division.

Natalie Blagowidow, M.D., Director

The Prenatal Diagnostic Center offers prenatal genetic counseling, Level 3 Ultrasound, chorionic villus sampling, percutaneous umbilical blood sampling and early and mid-trimester amniocentesis. Midtrimester amniocentesis on clinic patients will be performed by the resident under the supervision of the Director. The Director also gives didactic lectures in the area of genetics as related to Obstetrics and Gynecology.
