Continuing Medical Education at GBMC

Dedicated to providing state-of-the art programs that support the Medical Center's and physicians' efforts to enhance competence in patient care, expand medical knowledge, improve interpersonal and communication skills and system-based practices to the benefit of the patients

The Office of Continuing Medical Education at GBMC coordinates CME activities within the scope of our CME mission statement, maintains a database of accrued AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, and provides credit transcripts upon request to members of GBMC medical staff. Weekly, monthly and one-time only activities are planned for the education of practicing physicians and allied health professionals in the Baltimore-region and surrounding areas. Although programs are targeted to physicians, multi-disciplinary attendance is encouraged.

GBMC is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CME PROGRAMS

Planning CME Events – Basic Steps

The CME Office will be happy to collaborate with you in the planning of your CME activity. To allow sufficient time for the application review and approval process, program planners should submit the initial application at least 60 days prior to any new event (meeting, lecture, or conference). Speakers and moderators should submit the Disclosure of Financial Relationships form at least 30 days prior to their presentation at any CME event. If documents are submitted outside these timeframes, the event may not be eligible for CME designation if all necessary revisions and mitigations cannot be completed before the activity starts.

If you are a member of the GBMC Medical Staff and are interested in planning a new CME activity, please follow the steps below:

  1. Download and complete the CME Application Form. This form is designed to gather the information needed to ensure that the activity meets the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Please type your answers or print legibly. All sections of this document must be completed.
  2. The form requires the signatures of the Program Director and Department Chairperson. To avoid conflicts of interest, it is recommended that the Department Chairperson not also be the Program Director. If this situation cannot be avoided, please contact the CME Office for guidance.
  3. All individuals in control of educational content, including speakers and members of the Planning Committee must complete the Disclosure of Financial Relationships Form (included as part of the application form). A mitigation process will be necessary if it is determined that anyone involved with planning or delivering the educational content has relationships with ineligible companies. The ACCME defines ineligible companies as those whose primary business is “producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients”. For additional information and examples, please consult this ACCME document: https://www.accme.org/faq/what-accmes-definition-ineligible-company
  4.  An event must be approved by the CME Office prior to any marketing of the activity as CME. Upon activity approval, the CME Office will provide additional details on marketing requirements and discuss how certificates will be issued to participants.

CME Credits and Certificates

It is the responsibility of physicians and other attendees to complete the necessary steps to verify their participation in CME programs. For most CME programs, this is done through the completion of a web-based survey immediately following the event. Some sponsoring departments may require participants to sign in or complete a paper survey.
