These rounds provide a structured forum where all staff, clinical and non-clinical, come together regularly to discuss the emotional and social aspects of working in healthcare.
The purpose of the rounds is to understand the challenges and rewards that are intrinsic to providing care, not to solve problems or to focus on the clinical aspects of patient care.
These rounds can help staff feel more supported in their jobs, allowing them the time and space to reflect on their roles. Evidence shows that staff who attend Rounds feel less stressed and isolated, with increased insight and appreciation for each other's roles. They also help to reduce hierarchies between staff and to focus attention on relational aspects of care.
The underlying premise for the rounds is that the compassion shown by staff can make all the difference to a patient's experience of care, but that in order to provide compassionate care staff must, in turn, feel supported in their work.
These sessions are open to ALL employees, affiliated clinicians, trainees, and other authorized personnel.
Rounds are held both in-person and virtually via WebEx from Noon to 1pm on the 1st Wednesday of each month. (No rounds in January, July, and August)
Lunch is available for those attending IN PERSON and PRE-REGISTERED VIRTUAL attendees only.

History
In April 2007, Dr. John Adams, retired Chief of Pathology brought The Schwartz Center Rounds to GBMC. The Rounds were created by Kenneth Schwartz. Kenneth Schwartz died of lung cancer in September of 1995. Shortly before his death, he founded the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare which is dedicated to strengthening the human connection at the heart of health care. In 2014, GBMC renamed the rounds in honor of Dr. John Adams.
The intention of the rounds continues as it was first envisioned by Kenneth Schwartz and Dr. John Adams - to bring together professional caregivers and offer sessions designed to support, validate, provide guidance and education to those who are presented with difficult social and emotional issues of patient care.
