Gynecologic Oncology at GBMC
The only program in the region to offer a full array of minimally invasive treatments for cancer of the reproductive organs.
Using state-of-the-art technology, our gynecologic surgeons give women the opportunity to undergo major abdominal surgery through tiny incisions, dramatically decreasing recovery time and complications. Advanced techniques mean more precision for surgeons and easier recovery for patients. Our robotic surgical system allows physicians to operate through dime-sized incisions, directing "robot arms" to perform surgery with tiny surgical instruments. The physician views the surgical area through an endoscopic camera that reveals 3D magnified at 14 times greater than what the human eye can see. The surgeon uses controls to move the "robotic arms," eliminating the natural tremor of even the steadiest human hands.
Our gynecologic oncologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of women with cancer of the reproductive organs. This multi-disciplinary team includes experts in gynecologic surgery, medical oncology, infusion therapy, diagnostic imaging, and radiation oncology.
Our Services
GBMC offers minimally invasive, robotic and single incision surgery, also known as laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) for women with:
- Fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Ovarian Cysts
- Tubal Ligations
- Hysterectomies
- Pelvic Masses
- Removal of Ovaries
- Early Stage Endometrial and Ovarian Cancers
Preventing and Treating Gynecologic Cancers
Ovarian cancer is the difficult to detect early, as there is no good screening mechanism for it. It spreads quickly and might not cause symptoms until its advanced stages. Patients tend to report persistent symptoms...
Surgical Techniques
Advanced techniques mean more precision for surgeons and easier recovery for patients. LESS-Surgery through a single entry point. Laparoendoscopic Single-Site Surgery (LESS) is an advanced minimally invasive approach using a single entry point, typically the patient's navel. Advantages include a hidden scar under the naval, less pain after surgery, quicker recovery time, and fewer complications.
Advanced Treatments
Breakthrough infusion therapies.
Ovarian cancer is the fifth-leading cause of cancer deaths for women in the United States. GBMC oncologists are working to reverse this by using the intensive procedure of intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy as the standard of care for women suffering Stage III ovarian cancer. IP chemotherapy delivers medication directly into the abdominal lining, targeting the primary site of cancer cells. IP provides higher concentrations of drugs which remain active in the area for a longer time and are then absorbed intravenously, attacking cells that may have spread elsewhere in the body.
New Fertility-Sparing Treatment Option for Cervical Cancer Patients
A diagnosis of cervical cancer used to mean the end of a woman's fertility. For most women, the surgical treatment for cervical cancer is a radical hysterectomy, which helps to eliminate the cancer, but also eliminates the patient's ability to become pregnant. GBMC is performing a new procedure called a radical trachelectomy, to treat early-stage cervical cancer, and preserve the potential for the patient to conceive and carry a child to term.
Access to clinical trials.
As a member of the Gynecological Oncology Group (GOG), sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, GBMC gives patients access to major national clinical trials for gynecological cancers. This participation expands treatment options to include the latest ongoing clinical research.
