Even a Rare and Fatal Brain Tumor Couldn't Stop Katie
Katie endured a nine-hour brain surgery, only to get a biopsy. She was diagnosed with an optic pathway glioma, a rather rare and fatal brain tumor that was malignant and inoperable.
FAQ
Chemotherapy kills rapidly dividing cancer cells in different ways, depending on the type of cancer. Many chemotherapy drugs have been developed to target various growth patterns for different cancer types. Some drugs work by damaging DNA, preventing cells from dividing or disrupting cellular metabolism.
What are the side effects of chemotherapy?
Because chemotherapy works by destroying cancer cells, it may affect healthy cells as well. Talk to your doctor about the expected effects of your chemo treatment plan. Some of the most common side effects include hair loss, nausea, fatigue and vomiting.
Can my family be with me during treatment?
GBMC recognizes the importance of having the support of family throughout treatment, therefore one adult visitor is allowed with the patient in the infusion area, with the exception of the Owings Mills - Crossroads location.
Will my health insurance cover chemotherapy drugs?
Most insurance companies will cover at least a portion of the cost of treatment. We will help communicate with your insurance company before you begin treatment, so you'll know if any additional costs may be required.
