Dr. Geoffrey Neuner was on his way to becoming a psychiatrist when he joined a research project investigating a precision technique in radiation oncology called stereotactic radiosurgery. As part of his assignment, Dr. Neuner shadowed radiation oncologists in their work. What he witnessed inspired him to change course.

“I was impressed with how knowledgeable they were and with the intense relationships they developed with their patients,” he says. “The need for counseling patients at a critical point in their lives, combined with the technical aspects of radiation oncology – which were intriguing to me – that drew me in.” The doctor-patient relationships he sought in psychiatry took on a profound importance when it came to treating cancer patients.

“Oncology resonates with patients in a very deep way,” he adds. “Even for those whose cases we know to be curable, it’s a reminder of our mortality.”

“It’s a privilege – and deeply satisfying – to work with patients facing that and to help them through.”
