The Future of Cancer Care at GBMC: The Sandra R. Berman Pavilion
December 10, 2024In February, the Sandra R. Berman Pavilion will be fully open for patient care. GBMC took advantage of warmer November weather to thank donors and dedicate the new home of the Sandra & Malcom Berman Cancer Institute a little early.
Three generations of the Berman family were on hand as Maryland Governor Wes Moore helped to cut the ribbon in a special ceremony. Speakers included the Governor; GBMC President John Chessare, MD, MPH; GBMC HealthCare Board Chair Faith E. Thomas, Esq.; Herman & Walter Samuelson Medical Director of the Sandra & Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute Paul Celano, MD, FACP, FASCO; philanthropist Sandra R. Berman; and the Bermans' grandson, Mandalay Pictures President Jason Michael Berman.
The ribbon cutting, as well as a special evening ceremony for donor the week prior, were held to thank those who made the Sandra R. Berman Pavilion possible, from lead donors like the Bermans and Louis and Phyllis Friedman to the construction and project management leaders who brought the building in on time and under budget.
As part of ribbon cutting proceedings, guests who gathered for the historic occasion paused for a moment of silence to remember cancer patients and caregivers dear to them, each holding up a card on which they had written the names of those they were thinking of. With Dr. Celano leading the way, Governor Moore and members of the Berman family took a tour before the official ribbon cutting.
Governor Moore said, “I think that’s the greatest tribute of this entire pavilion. It’s the work, so everybody who walks in here feels like they’re walking into a place with family, a place of support, a place of love, a place where every single person is going to be seen and supported, like they are kin.”
