Fred Chan, MD - Walk A Mile Chair

GBMC's Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE) and Domestic Violence programs are unmatched in the area. As the only hospital in the county to offer 24/7 assistance to victims, no matter their age, GBMC offers a service that unfortunately is vital.

Though it is a topic often left undiscussed, GBMC wanted to ensure those in the community who need these services know where to go. Last year, we hosted the first Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, the intent of which is to educate the community on sexual assault and domestic violence and show support for those affected by walking a mile in high heels. It’s a powerful and collaborative event that sheds light on a topical issue for women and men at all ages.

The event had such success, we decided to keep it going! This year's Walk a Mile Planning Committee is chaired by Dr. Fred Chan, Medical Director of Inpatient Services. Let's hear where he wants to take us!

What is your role at GBMC?

I joined GBMC in 1998 as a full-time hospitalist and became the hospitalist director for about a decade before gradually transitioning into my current role. I use my clinical background and knowledge of the Information System to facilitate the collaboration between clinicians and the information system team. Working with physicians and executive leadership, I also have opportunities to support the design of the system to support GBMC’s clinical quality, patient safety and business initiatives.

Why did you want to be involved with Walk a Mile in Her Shoes?

Last year, I had the opportunity to participate in the inaugural GBMC Walk a Mile event. In my years at GBMC, I had heard about how the GBMC SAFE program served our community and was grateful I had the opportunity to work with the team to increase awareness for the walk. Through the planning activities, I learned in greater detail how the team partners with Child Protective Services, local universities, sexual assault counselors and law enforcement agencies to ensure victims are treated compassionately and respectfully during their time of need. I look forward to being a part of the team planning for this year’s event.

What do you hope to bring to the event this year?

Over the last 18 years, I have had opportunities to work with many wonderful providers, clinicians and staff at GBMC. I look forward to partnering with area leaders and sponsors to increase awareness, outreach and recognition of the GBMC SAFE program as well as the Walk a Mile event. Through their partnership, I hope to build on the success of last year’s walk with the goal of achieving positive, lasting impact and supporting this critical program for our community.
