Let's Get Healthy - Episode 1
March 8, 2023
In the first episode of GBMC’s YouTube series, "Let's Get Healthy," Krystina Wales is joined by Jana Wolff, RD, LDN, a registered dietitian with GBMC’s Comprehensive Obesity Management Program (COMP), to discuss weight management and nutrition. They begin by explaining the process for those interested in pursuing bariatric surgery, which involves meeting with a surgeon and working with a dietitian for group and individual counseling sessions. They stress the importance of behavioral changes and mental, physical, and emotional preparation before surgery, as well as the insurance requirements for nutrition education sessions.
The conversation then moves to emotional eating, which can be a challenge for many people. Jana explains that everyone eats for both fuel and emotional purposes, but there is a line that can be crossed where people start to eat out of boredom, stress, depression, anxiety, or procrastination. Jana advises patients to name their emotions and address them instead of using food as an outlet. She also recommends removing oneself from the environment and taking a drink of water or a breath of fresh air to overcome cravings.
Jana emphasizes the importance of nutrition over just food, as people tend to go for what is convenient rather than what is nutritious. She advises people to plan for grocery shopping, giving themselves balanced meals with lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and smart starches. By doing so, people will be fueled, have fewer cravings, and manage their blood sugar levels better. She recommends looking up recipes and ideas online for quick and easy meals that are balanced, such as crock pot meals, Instant Pot meals, and air fryer meals.
To start putting together a more balanced plate, Jana suggests picking a couple of recipes for the week and making sure to plan for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She also advises buying the foods for those recipes when grocery shopping. Finally, Jana suggests taking small steps, such as reducing portion sizes, choosing healthier snacks, and drinking more water, to start making a difference right away.
Overall, this edition of “Let’s Get Healthy,” provides practical advice and guidance for those looking to manage their weight and improve their nutrition. It emphasizes the importance of planning, preparation, and behavioral changes, while also acknowledging the challenges that come with emotional eating.
