Frequently Asked Questions
Pediatric Surgery
What should my child wear the day of surgery?
Please have your child wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. We do not recommend wearing jewelry the day of surgery as it will need to be removed prior to the procedure.
Should my child take routine daily medications before surgery?
Please consult with your child's physician about taking medications before surgery. If you are instructed to give your child medication, please do so with only a sip of water.
What do I need to bring the day of surgery?
Your child can bring a favorite toy or blanket to help make them more comfortable. If your pediatrician gave you a pre-surgery copy of your child's medical history and recent physical, please bring it with you the morning of surgery. Your surgeon's office will give you paperwork to complete prior to the surgery and specify any other instructions for before and after care. If your surgeon gives you a consent form, please bring it with you the day of surgery.
What is the Visitor's Policy?
We only allow two family members or caregivers at the bedside for our pediatric patients (under 18) and one visitor for our adult patients before and after surgery. We do not allow children under the age of 12 in the recovery room.
May I go into the operating room with my child?
We only allow one family member (mother/father/grandparent/caregiver) into the operating room (OR). You may stay in the OR just until your child falls asleep to help them through the process. Big smiles and reassuring thoughts are encouraged! Please note that pregnant women may not enter the OR.
When will I be able to see my child after surgery?
You will be able to see your child as soon as possible. The surgeon will come to speak with you after the surgery and your child will be transported to the recovery room. As soon as your child starts to awaken from anesthesia, you will be taken to the recovery room. It is very important to us that you are reunited with your child as soon as possible.
How do I care for my child after surgery?
We will review discharge instructions prior to your child going home and will address any concerns you may have. Please contact your child's surgeon if your child develops a fever of 102 degrees or higher, that does not respond to Tylenol or other fever-reducing medications, or you feel your child's pain is not being controlled with a medication prescribed at discharge.
