Bariatric Surgery & Comprehensive Obesity Management Program
Are you struggling to lose weight? The Medical Weight Loss Program at GBMC’s COMP can help!
Our comprehensive program combines pharmacotherapy, nutritional intervention, and behavioral changes to assist you in reaching your weight loss goals.
Who is eligible?
You are eligible for the GBMC Medical Weight Loss Program if you:
- If your BMI falls between 27 and 29.9, you must have at least one obesity-related comorbidity (such as diabetes or hypertension) to be eligible for medication-based treatment. This requirement does not apply if your BMI is 30 or higher.
- Medication coverage eligibility depends on your insurance carrier or employer. We recommend contacting your insurance provider before your appointment to confirm coverage.
- Current COMP patients (previously undergone bariatric surgery at GBMC), you cannot have a new Medical Weight Loss consultation unless you have completed your annual appointment with post-op lab work.
- New patients must have had a recent annual appointment with their primary care provider (within two years) along with lab work.
What does the program include?
- Medication Management: If appropriate, we provide medication management to support your weight loss journey. We will carefully assess your medical history, including recent lab results, and collaboratively select the most suitable medication based on your preferences, insurance coverage, availability, and appropriateness. All prescribed medications are FDA approved for weight-loss and are available through your own retail pharmacy. We do not offer compounded medications or on-site medication administration.
- Individualized Counseling: Our registered dietitians offer personalized counseling to guide you through dietary changes. All patients must participate in nutritional counseling with a registered dietitian at minimum once every 6 months to continue in the program.
- Behavioral Therapy: We will guide you through understanding the complexities of obesity and the reasons behind weight gain. Additionally, we’ll assist you in identifying and modifying your eating habits, as well as incorporating exercise into your lifestyle.
