Preparing For Surgery at GBMC

Before Surgery

Consult with your surgeon about what medicines to hold before surgery

If you have questions about your surgery, please contact your surgeon's office.

You may receive additional calls from Registration/Insurance/Pre-Op

Notify your surgeon’s office if you develop a cold, sore throat, fever, or any other illness before your surgery.

Day of Surgery

Before Coming to the Hospital:

  • Leave all valuables, money, electronic devices and jewelry at home
  • Shower or bathe according to recommended surgeon's instructions.
  • Brush your teeth.
  • Wear clean, loose and comfortable clothing.
  • Do not wear makeup or use lotions.
  • Do not wear contact lenses; wear eyeglasses.

What to Bring with You:

  • If you will be admitted to hospital after surgery, please pack a small suitcase with clothes/basic toiletries and leave in car or with friend/family member. You can have suitcase brought to you after you are admitted to your room
  • Photo ID and insurance card(s).
  • Someone 18 years or older to drive you home.
  • Any paperwork from your surgeon.
  • CPAP machine (if applicable).
  • Brace, sling or crutches (if applicable)

Eating or Drinking:

  • Your surgeon will inform you about any special diets before surgery.
  • Do not drink alcohol or use recreational drugs for at least 24 hours before surgery.
  • No smoking/tobacco use the day of surgery.
  • Do not eat any gum, candy, or mints.

Admitting and Registration

  • Park in Lily Garage for General Operating Room (GOR). Take elevator “E” located across from Emergency Room
  • Park in Berman or Iris Garage for Women’s and Outpatient Surgery Center (WOSC). Use Pavilion West Entrance
  • If necessary, deductible or co-payments will be collected at this time. Please bring insurance card(s) and identification with photo.

During Pre-op

You will change into a hospital gown and nurse will coordinate the following:

  • Your height, weight, vital signs and allergies will be recorded.
  • Review medications, medical/surgical history, and review necessary consent forms for your signature.
  • Required tests such as blood glucose, pregnancy test, EKG, if indicated
  • Prepare the surgery site.
  • Document your designated contact person to receive updates during your surgery.

For your safety, you may be asked the same questions by multiple caregivers (i.e. name, date of birth).

Visitors and Updates

  • Visitors are welcome, but we may need to limit visitors during the pre-op preparation.
  • Your designated contact person will receive regular updates during surgery and recovery.

After Surgery

Outpatient Surgery Patients

  • Your surgeon will follow-up with your designated contact person after surgery.
  • You will be taken to the Recovery Room (PACU) immediately following surgery.
  • Your post-op nurse will review discharge instructions with you and your designated contact person.
  • Someone over the age of 18 must be available to drive you home.
  • We recommend that a responsible adult remain at home with you for the first 24 hours following your surgery.
  • For your safety and well-being, please call for assistance before getting out of bed.

Separate, individual bills for this surgery may be sent to you from the hospital, your surgeon, and anesthesiologist.
