Application to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) will be through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). No paper applications will be accepted.
A completed application to our program will consist of
- ERAS Common Application Form
- Medical School Transcript
- Dean's Letter/Medical Student Performance Evaluation
- Three Letters of Recommendation - At least one of which must be from an internal medicine primary care or medical subspecialist preceptor.
- Personal Statement
- USMLE Transcript - For International Medical Graduates, we require a minimum USMLE Step 2 score of 230 and encourage USMLE Step 3 score above 220.
- COMLEX Step 1 minimum score of 600
- ECFMG Status Report (International Medical Graduates Only)

The Internal Medicine Residency Program will be conducting virtual interviews in accordance with the AAIM guidance. This is to provide equity and fairness to all applicants, educators, staff, and others involved in the interview process.
The program will be using the Thalamus system for the scheduling of the interviews. Interview invitations will be sent out using this method on a rolling bases starting in early October.
Criteria for Selection

Applicants are invited to interview based on the following criteria:- Completed application received by deadline
- Graduate of US or International medical school within 5 years of starting of internship year or an IMG who shows research or clinical experience in internal medicine (categorical candidates) or field of interest (preliminary applicants).
- Selection for rank list
Applicants are selected for the NRMP based on:- Personal interview with at least two faculty members who evaluate
- Medical School Performance
- Communication/Conversational Skills
- Personality
- Maturity/Appearance
- Clinical Knowledge/Coherence of Thought
- Self-Awareness
- Teamwork
- USMLE score(s)
- Interview score in relation to all other applicants
- Rank meeting (All faculty and chief residents)
- IMGs must have passed Step 1, Step 2 and the CSA exam by the NRMP match deadline for submission of rank list.
- All applicants must notify the program if they have had any irregularities, waivers or match agreement violations prior to their invitation. GBMC screens all applicants on the NRMP website to ensure that they have no existing actions against them by the NRMP.
- Personal interview with at least two faculty members who evaluate
Criteria for commencing internship:
All NRMP matched candidates for internship must meet the following criteria prior to start of internship:
- Graduated from a medical school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)
- Graduated from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
- Graduated from a medical school outside of the United States and Canada with a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), or have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction
- Graduated from a medical school outside the United States and have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
APPLICANTS WHO ARE NON-US CITIZENS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
- Permanent Resident Status: Applicants must have permanent resident status with a work authorization.
- J-1 Visa: Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for a J-1 Visa through the ECFMG Exchange Visitor Sponsorship Program. Application for the J-1 Visa will be completed either after the match or after a position is offered to the applicant. Eligibility requirements can be found at www.ECFMG.org. A DS-2019 from the ECFMG must be received prior to beginning the program.
- H1-B Visas are not accepted for entrance into the residency program.
The program will assist the resident as necessary with completion of immigration paperwork, but the ultimate responsibility for completion and maintaining status remains with the resident.
In addition, before commencing training, the applicant must must:
- Apply for a U.S. Social Security Number
- Sign the Residency Agreement
- Complete the GBMC Employment Application Form and Disclosure Form
- Provide documentation of medical school graduation
- Complete BLS/ACLS at GBMC
- Successfully complete Employee Health Screening
- Attend a GBMC orientation session
