How many PGY-1 positions do you have?

How many beds are there at GBMC?

There are a total of 342 acute and subacute care licensed beds.

How many admissions are there annually?

Approximately 23,000 with almost 52,000 ER visits

What is the average daily census on the medical service?

Average intern census is 5-7 patients. Average resident census is 12-15 patients. 
Interns typically admit 3-5 patients. This may include 2 transfers from the ICU.

What types of careers do the program's graduates pursue?

In the past five years our graduates have pursued the following career paths:

  • 15% pursued careers as Primary Care Physicians.
  • 45% entered Fellowship Training.
  • 30% practice as Hospitalist Physicians.

How often are residents on call?

*We have NO 24-hour calls* 

 

  • PGY-1 residents have only 2 weeks of night float in the second half of their year.
  • During the general floor months, PGY-1 residents alternate between short call (6:30am to 4pm) and long call (6:30am to 7pm) with 1 day-off-in 7.
  • The ICU interns and residents work 7am to 7pm on their main rotation.
  • PGY-1 residents spend a total of 4 weeks of ICU nights in 2-week blocks. ICU night rotation is from 7pm to 7am.
  • PGY-2 residents have one 2-week block of night float in the first half of the year.
  • PGY-3 residents do a total of two 2-week blocks of night Medical Admitting Resident (MAR) throughout the year

What kind of conferences are there for residents?

We have a wide variety of educational opportunities at GBMC:

  • Morning Report, Monday through Thursday
  • Grand Rounds, Friday
  • Didactic Conference every day
  • ICU and inpatient lecture series for each rotation
  • Robust outpatient curriculum which includes cases discussed at morning report and protected didactic time
  • State-of-the-art Simulation Center with year-long curriculum for residents, and faculty too

What is the board pass rate for GBMC residents?

The 3-year rolling board pass rate is 86%.

Do GBMC residents participate in research activities?

All residents have access to many projects. Some examples include Quality & Improvement projects, ACP poster presentations, and JCHIMP, a peer-reviewed journal.

Do residents have access to the library?

Our library is a treasure trove of literature available to our residents.

Do residents get book stipend?

Yes! Categorical residents get $1000. Prelim interns will get $330.

What kind of visas do you accept for graduates of foreign medical schools?

We sponsor J-1 visas. We do not sponsor H-1 visas.

Do you require clinical experience in the United States?

Externships and medical school rotations in American hospitals are invaluable in helping us identify extraordinary candidates. We do not, however, require such experience.

Do you have a cut off for USMLE scores?

In general, our residents have excellent board scores, averaging in the 240s on both USMLE Step 1 and Step 2. We typically do not grant interviews to candidates who have ever failed a step of the USMLE. Unless an applicant has a particularly superb record, we discourage applicants who have graduated more than 5 years ago.

Do you accept applications from international medical graduates?

Our goal is to matriculate the highest quality intern class possible. We frequently have excellent candidates from overseas institutions.

Do you have medical student clerkships, externships, or observerships?

We have medical students from the University of Maryland Medical School who spend part of their core clinical rotation in Internal Medicine with our floor teams. Unfortunately, we do not offer observerships.
