What We Need to Remember as the State Reopens
May 7, 2020Yesterday, Governor Larry Hogan announced the resumption of elective medical procedures and the broadening of permitted outdoor activities such as golfing, fishing, boating, and more. In addition, state parks, playgrounds, and beaches will open for walking and exercise. While it may seem that we are moving toward the end of COVID-19, it is important to remember the following:
The curve has not flattened completely
As the state begins to open and normal activities resume, it is easy to believe that there is no longer a risk for COVID-19. However, this is not the case. It is especially important to remember that while the risk is low, we can still become infected. That is why it is vital to continue certain safety measures such as hand hygiene. We should continue to wash our hands as if the virus is still present to reduce the spread of germs.
Maintaining social distance is still important
The COVID-19 pandemic has created many challenges as we are confined to our homes. We have all been in this together and it can be very hard to avoid immediately gathering with friends and family. After all, it is human nature to crave physical contact such as hugs, handshakes, high fives, and more. But we need to remember that social distancing is what will keep us safe from spreading the virus to others until there is a vaccine. As restrictions are lifted, if you can, try visiting a few people at a time rather than having all of your friends and family together in one setting.
Masks and face coverings should still be worn
As mentioned above, we must continue to reduce the risk of spread in any way we can. This includes continuing to wear masks and face coverings in public spaces such as grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores. This precaution will be extremely useful until there is a vaccine that can protect everyone. Remember, just because you are not showing symptoms doesn’t mean you can’t spread the virus.
We know everyone cannot wait to reunite with friends and family – and we feel the same way! But we want to make sure our community continues to remain safe and flatten the curve as the state begins to open again. We have come a long way together. And together, we will see this through to the end.
