Colon and Rectal Cancer Discussion Facebook Live
March 30, 2021Colon cancer is much more common than many people realize. It is the third most common cancer in both men and women, and it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. For Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Nina Ferraris, MD, colon and rectal surgeon at GBMC Health Partners, spoke with WMAR’s Christian Shaffer about screening recommendations and when patients should talk to their doctor about a colonoscopy. Some of the other topics she covered include:
- What happens before and during a colonoscopy
- How colonoscopies can prevent cancer before it starts
- Colon cancer in young people
- The symptoms of colon cancer
- How colon cancer is treated
Dr. Ferraris acknowledged that some people are embarrassed to talk about their symptoms, but she encouraged patients to communicate with their doctor if they have any concerns. The doctor’s goal is to make you feel better and you shouldn’t have to suffer alone.
