Jade's journey in GBMC's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) began at just 28 weeks gestation, weighing a mere 15 ounces, surrounded by wires and uncertainty. Jade, along with her parents, Brandon and Cyndi, faced the challenges of a NICU stay at GBMC from September 19, 2019, to January 31, 2020. The NICU team became a main source of empathy and support for the family, and the unit was their home away from home. This transformative experience ignited a passion within them to make a lasting impact and help other families going through similar challenges.

An intramural league hockey player, Brandon decided to channel his energy into organizing a unique fundraising event. Having also served on the GBMC Father's Day 5K Committee for three years, he understood the NICU’s fundraising needs and decided to collaborate with the Philadelphia Flyers to create an extraordinary experience. On November 18, 2023, Brandon held the first “NICU Classic” at the Philadelphia Flyers vs. Las Vegas Golden Knights game. Brandon partnered with the Flyers organization to acquire tickets to the game, which he sold to his friends and family in exchange for a small donation. Following the game, Brandon and his team had the opportunity to play a scrimmage on the same ice as the professionals. The response was overwhelming, with 193 tickets sold and $3,250 raised for GBMC’s NICU.

With the success of the inaugural fundraiser, Brandon aspires to make it an annual tradition. The goal is not only to raise funds, but also to create a lasting impact and spread awareness about the NICU and the challenges faced by many families.

In the midst of their fundraising efforts, Brandon and Cyndi joyfully reported Jade, now 4 years old, is thriving in her second year of pre-K. Their personal journey has convinced them there's no better cause to support than the NICU at GBMC. They understand every NICU family's situation is unique, and events like the NICU Classic and the Father's Day 5K make the challenging times more manageable.

This inspiring family's dedication to giving back serves as a powerful example of turning personal challenges into opportunities for positive change. As Jade continues to grow and inspire, her story becomes a beacon of hope for other families facing similar struggles in the NICU.

If you're touched by this story of Jade and her family and want to make a difference, we invite you to support our upcoming Father's Day 5K & 1 Mile Walk. Every dollar counts for our tiniest patients at GBMC. Visit www.gbmc.org/5K to learn more about how you can get involved.

Together, let's create a community where hope and support flourish for NICU families. Your generosity can make a significant impact on the lives of these courageous families.
