High School Student Program - Volunteers at GBMC
The High School Volunteer application is now CLOSED for 2024 summer program. Please check back in the spring of 2025 for the next summer session.
GBMC has offered high school students the opportunity to participate in its student volunteer program for many years. The program is only available during the summer months (June, July and August). Student volunteers gain documented community service hours required for graduation in a positive healthcare setting. For many it is an introduction to ‘the world of work’!
Who Can Apply?
- Students who are 16 years of age by July 1
- Students who have completed 10th grade
- Graduating High School students should apply to the College Program
Expectations:
- High school students volunteer 1 day per week for 4 hours during the summer.
- To volunteer, students must attend a High School Preview Night and Orientation.
- Please consider family plans before applying. Travel, vacation, camps and family commitments often conflict with the time expectation. If it is more than 2 weeks, we will not be able to accept your application.
- We cannot accommodate fractured schedules throughout the summer.
- Hospital volunteering is highly regulated. Consequently, there are a number of steps needed to become a volunteer. These include an application, interview, health requirements, and orientation. Volunteer Services will guide you through all of these requirements.
- Students will be expected to follow a dress code (includes a uniform and badge) and to clock in and out when they are at the hospital volunteering.
- Volunteering at GBMC is not a shadowing/observation role.
Placement:
Volunteer placements are the responsibility of GBMC Volunteer Services. Placements are based on the organization’s needs, as well as the volunteer’s aptitude and availability. We anticipate having approximately 15 openings this summer. We will not be able to accept everyone who applies. Completing required steps is critical for consideration.
