After a full week of giving her all in caring for patients in the Outpatient Infusion Center at GBMC’s Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute, Judy Feeney, RN, likes to get outdoors on the weekend. She loves hiking, kayaking, and canoeing.

“I am an outdoors person,” she said. “It helps me relax and recharge. It is my happy place.”

Most medical oncology patients will recognize nurse Judy Feeney. She arrived at GBMC in the ‘80s as an outpatient oncology nurse and has been providing care and delivering treatment to cancer patients since.

“I came to GBMC to do exactly what I am doing now,” she said. “I deliver chemotherapy, mostly intravenous, along with treatment to cancer patients.”

At the time she started in the profession, many facilities were doing inpatient chemotherapy; however, GBMC was one of the few facilities providing outpatient infusion services.

“Even in my 20s, I knew this population of patients did not have time to waste and as the years went on, outpatient care has become the standard of care," she said.

At GBMC, oncology nurses are committed to their work. Feeney said, “commitment and responsibility are key when it comes to taking care of patients.

“We were essential during COVID, and during that time, none of the patients missed out on their treatment plans. The commitment to care was very strong.”

In a field she finds personally and professionally rewarding, Feeney enjoys building social interactions into providing treatment and becoming better acquainted with the patients she serves.

“Oncology nurses at GBMC are a group of committed people, as all those in the Cancer Institute are. We are recognized in the region as a Cancer Institute where the patient gets the best care he or she possibly can. Here, you are not a number, we know you by your name.”
