Recognitions Achieved at the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute
December 2, 2021GBMC has always been recognized for the quality of our medical staff, which was again confirmed in Baltimore magazine's 2021 Top Doctors issue. The issue featured an article on GBMC medical oncologist and hematologist Dr. Mei Tang. Dr. Tang was one of 17 physicians from the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute featured in the list of 135 GBMC physicians across 69 specialties. Several of GBMC's medical staff members were recognized in more than one category, and some have been recognized many years in a row!

Dr. Ray https://www.gbmc.org/blanco, MD, MBA, FCS, has been named Medical Director of the Milton J. Dance, Jr. Head & Neck Center, Head and Neck Surgery.
Dedicated to head and neck patients with benign and malignant tumors for the past 15 years, Dr. https://www.gbmc.org/blanco earned his medical degree from the University of Santo Thomas, completed his residency at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, his fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, and received his MBA degree from Liberty University in July 2021.
Dr. https://www.gbmc.org/blanco’s clinical practice includes treating patients with salivary gland tumors, parathyroid gland tumors, cancers of the mouth, throat, larynx, cervical esophagus, thyroid, sinuses, head and neck skin malignancy, and skull base. Other special interests are organ-sparing surgeries and laryngeal preservation surgery.
Dr. https://www.gbmc.org/blanco will continue to practice and care for our head and neck cancer patients and perform the necessary leadership responsibilities in his new role as the Medical Director for the Center.
Kristin Tsigounis, ONN-CG, has achieved certification as an Oncology Nurse Navigator on her first try. The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) currently offers a certification for oncology navigators. Acquiring this certification requires the studying and understanding of important concepts and skills of professional patient navigation and the successful completion of an exam. This certification, Oncology Nurse Navigator – Certified Generalist (ONN-CG), was officially recognized by the Commission on Cancer as meeting its standard 4.2 “Oncology Nursing Credentials” in October 2020.
The Shelia K. Riggs Radiation Oncology Center at GBMC has been named a statewide Model of Excellence. The Riggs Radiation Oncology Center provides the highest quality radiotherapeutic treatments, advanced technology, and lifesaving breakthroughs.
The Clinical Trials Program of the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute has sailed through its most recent Quality Assurance Audit by NRG Oncology. Every three years, NRG Oncology conducts audits to assure the quality of clinical trials execution. As practitioners of clinical trials, the GBMC team protects both the integrity of the science and the human subjects who participate in research studies.
