Financial Navigator Clears Hurdles for Cancer Patients
April 29, 2022Thanks to generous donors, the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute puts the needs of patients before all other considerations – including their ability to pay. A new member of the Oncology Support Services (OSS) team, a Financial Navigator, is not only helping patients navigate complicated applications for support but also saving the Cancer Institute money.
Meet Monica Williams, who brings to GBMC a resume that includes work in both pharmaceuticals and finance. She is familiar with the myriad opportunities for paying for expensive chemotherapy medications and the sometimes-arduous processes for securing them. In her new role, Monica greets cancer patients with a “financial embrace.” She supports them through complex applications to get the cost of their therapies covered with the blend of expertise and empathy that sets the Berman Cancer Institute apart. Her work brings expensive medications within reach of patients whose insurance coverage falls short or who lack insurance altogether.
Adding Monica to the team not only benefits patients, it also helps the Berman Cancer Institute make better use of its resources. In the past, donations have been stretched to help as many patients as possible afford treatment. The work of the Financial Navigator ensures the burden of paying for care doesn’t fall entirely on GBMC. Monica is taking full advantage of support programs offered by pharmaceutical companies and others to the benefit of the Berman Cancer Institute and its patients.
For her part, Monica is delighted to be working at GBMC, drawn by the vision to provide for every patient, every time, the care we would want for our loved ones.
