The Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Therapy Unit addresses decompression sickness, severe carbon monoxide poisoning, non-healing chronic wounds, osteoradionecrosis (bone damage caused by radiation therapy) and other radiation injuries. HBO treatments deliver 100 percent oxygen in an enclosed chamber at greater than atmospheric pressure. The oxygen dissolves into the plasma of blood circulation, causing markedly increased tissue oxygenation that stimulates healing by preserving tissues, increasing blood vessel formation and controlling infections. The outpatient facility has four mono-place oxygen chambers.
Although the concept has been around since the 1950's, and recompression chambers were experimented with as early as the mid-1600s, only within the past 20 years has research shown hyperbaric oxygen to be a powerful medical tool.
